Take a seat in this dampened Earth. A vast expanse buried deep in the mountainous forest of the U.S., where you’re sat around a campfire taking in the timbres of a smeared Americana from an exhumed acoustic guitar, accompanied by vibrations of the plants and creatures that inhabit the landscape.

Robert Eggplant is the solo project of Boise, Idaho resident Luke Hayhurst: an environmental advocate, sound collector, and avid hiker, with a brilliant release on NL-based label Shimmering Moods.

The tracks on this cassette are a reaction towards cognitive dissonance, excessive waste, and exploitation of the natural beauty of our resources. Re-constructed acoustic guitar improvs spliced with field recording, and an overall atmosphere Roy Montgomery would be quite proud of. It's a study on the gradation of camping experiences, and the level in which we remove ourselves from urban comforts and experience nature and its surroundings.

Empty Campground is a psychedelic journey deep within the outskirts of the Heartland, aspiring for harmony in the wilderness.

"Robert Eggplant is the performative
soubriquet of Boise Idaho's Luke Hayhurst,
an environmentalist, sound artist and hiker
who also plays a reconstituted acoustic guitar
he picked up on his ramblings. Eggplant's
background is in punk and noise music, but for
the last few years he has focused on work that
blends acoustic guitar and field recordings.
Unlike some artists with a similar approach,
Eggplant weights the recordings more heavily
than the guitar. His work plunges us into the
middle of nowhere with vibrating strings as
our only accompaniment. This lends his sound
a rural edge that is maintained even when the
musical arrangements start shimmering in
the distance. A sort of three-dimensionality to
his process rates environment above all else,
which is something I haven't encountered in
such stark terms before. It creates a different
kind of deep listening experience that is
super interesting."

Reminding me a bit of one of my other favourite releases of the year, craig tattersall's apropos territory, in that it blends composition and field recordings in such a way that the distinction feels utterly seamless, and like a language unto itself. Muted, greyscale ambient that aptly mimics the introspective calm and leaden stillness of winter. Hushed pads rise and curl like frosted mists, brittle rhythmic elements crunch and crack, and there's a resigned sense of solitude that permeates every second. This isn't quite as vibey and whimsical as "Only Love From Now On," but it's still a worthy addition to Villain's growing discography. PannionSeer
